SLJ Day 18 - Week 4

Day 18: Famous/Infamous animals
It’s time to go to the zoo! You have been invited to tour the national zoo with some students from one of the local schools. Although you don’t really know anyone you decide to be brave and give it a go! When you arrive at the front gates, you walk into the zoo and you immediately see…
Activity 1
Imagine that you have just entered the zoo. On your blog, tell us what you think you might see on your visit. You can start with this sentence:
I had just entered the zoo when, all of a sudden, I saw…
Aim for a blog post of 8 - 10 sentences in length. You can do it!
Activity 2
When you are at the zoo, you have the chance to learn about some animals that are specifically found in your country. They are called ‘indigenous’ animals. This means that they are originally from your country. Use Google to identify two indigenous animals from your country. On your blog, post a picture of the animals and tell us a bit about them. What are they called? Where do they live? What do they eat?

The kiwi is a nocturnal, flightless bird that lives on the forest floor. The kiwi are the only bird to have nostrils at the end of their bill, and forage for food by digging in the earth and smelling it out. The kiwi is the New Zealand national icon.

The tuatara is a lizard like reptile that can be found living on the wild on offshore New Zealand Islands. A relic from the dinosaur age, the tuatara are nocturnal, and live for a very long time. The south museum is Invercagill features a large exhibit and breeding programme.

BONUS ACTIVITY

The New Zealand government is trying to save the kakapo. They are looking for creative ideas. What do you think they could do? On your blog, tell us what you think should be done to save the kakapo. Please be as creative as you can!

I think that people should have camera's set up so you know what is going on. Then we should set traps for all the predators trying to kill them. Last of all we should move them to much safe and healthy place to live.

  1. Hi Telesia,

It would be so wonderful to read a story written by you! Again, if you get time to write a story for activity one it would be very interesting to read.

    Hi Telesia,

It would be pretty amazing if you wrote a story using the sentence starter, "I had just entered the zoo when, all of a sudden, I saw..."

Perhaps you could include the kiwi bird and the tuatara in your story...

Speaking of the kiwi bird and tuatara I did not realise that both were nocturnal. I also had no idea that there was a breeding programme for the tuatara down in Invercargill. I've been to Invercargill before but didn't know about the programme. I will have to pop into the museum the next time that I'm down south!

Keep up the great blogging, Telesia. Hopefully you'll have time to tell us a story, too!

    Cheers,
    Rachel :)

I also enjoy reading stories. I think it would be cool to hear one from you.
