Day 1: 100% PURE New Zealand

Well, the time has now come! School’s out for the holidays and your tour of New Zealand is about to begin. I hope that you are ready and excited! Curious Kiwi certainly is – he can’t wait to start the Great Kiwi Road Trip! Before you all hit the road, let’s take a minute to review some key facts about New Zealand.3.jpg

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website☺.
Facts
1. In New Zealand, Maori people to greet each other using a hongi. Which is when two people press foreheads and noses against each other.
2. There are approximately 4.4 million people living in New Zealand. 69% off the people here are European, 14.6 are indigenous Maori, 9.2% are Asian and 6.9% are pacific islanders.
3. Some ways through New Zealanders hearts are farming. We love to farm for it’s our way of life.
Activity 2: Your tour of New Zealand is going to start right here in Auckland. Watch the Tourist video for Auckland to learn about the awesome things that you can see and do in the city. Once you’ve finished, choose your favourite five activities from the video and list them on your blog.

5 Activities
  • Sky Tower - The Sky Tower is an observation and telecommunications tower located at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets in the Auckland
  • Kelly Tarlton - Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium is a public aquarium in Auckland, New Zealand that was opened in 1985. Located at 23 Tamaki Drive, it was the brainchild of New Zealand marine archaeologist and diver Kelly Tarlton.
  • Mission Bay - Mission Bay is a seaside suburb of Auckland city, on the North Island of New Zealand, with a population of 5469.
  • Piha Beach - Its a famous spot for experience surfers
  • Auckland Domain - The Auckland Domain is Auckland's oldest park, and at 75 hectares one of the largest in the city. Located in the central suburb of Grafton, the park contains all of the explosion crater and most of the surrounding tuff ring of the Pukekawa volcano.

Bonus Activity: Now it’s time to start your tour! Curious Kiwi decides to start by taking you on a short tour through downtown Auckland. You stop at the Sky Tower, the tallest building in all of New Zealand. When you look up, you see a huge New Zealand flag on the top of the tower. This flag was created back in 1902. That makes the New Zealand flag 115 years old!

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.
For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish. I would recommend the Flag Designer website. It allows you to create a flag in three easy steps. When you are done, take a screenshot of your flag and post it on your blog.

Here is my Flag!. The flag that inspired me was the Belgium flag, except I didn't use the colour red and I parted then diagonally. Then I just added a cross to finish it off! Hope you like it

  3. Hi Telesia! Welcome to the Winter Learning Journey blogging programme. We are so excited that you have joined us again this holiday :)

We are also really pleased to see that you have posted activity blogs and comments on other student's blog sites. We love to see that you are being so positive and supportive. Awesome.

Speaking of awesome, have you ever been to any of the cool places that you listed for Activity #2? I can highly recommend all five, although Piha beach is one of my 'all time' favourite places to go. It is so beautiful - very rugged and quite spectacular. I also love to go to the beach beside Piha. It is called Karekare. The sand at Karekare beach is mostly black and it creates a really amazing effect against the backdrop of the ocean.

I really hope that you will get the chance to travel west one day to walk along the black sand beaches. In the meantime, keep up the great work with your blogging! We are really enjoying your posts :)

    Cheers,
    Rachel

  6. Salaam Sia,

I really like the Flag you made and I think that should be the flag of New Zealand because it has a really sharp and simple detail and I like how you use yellow, Blue and Black colours to represent the Belgium Flag!. I never known that Maori people had to greet each other using a Hongi, so I did learnt something today, haha!

    Kind Regards,
    Anastacia
