SLJ WK3 Day 5 Activity 1, 2 & 3

Activity 1:Hiking Tongariro
In 1990, one of the largest national parks in New Zealand, Tongariro, was listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a truly spectacular place to visit! Thousands of people go to Tongariro every year and hike the Tongariro Crossing. Visit the Tongariro website to learn more about the one-day hike.

On your blog tell us what you would need to pack if you were going to hike the Tongariro Crossing. What should you bring with you? Write a list of at least 5 items.

Other than making sure that you have the right equipment, what else should you do before heading out on a big hike? Click here to learn how to stay safe while you’re hiking.

What we should bring:

Water (a lot)
Food (a lot)
Spare Clothing
Equipment such as tents, knives and more
Map (just in case)
Sunscreen and Sun hat
Rain coat/Jacket

Also make sure you are in a safe area and that you know where you are going. If you don’t, it is important bring a smartphone or a compus just in case.

Activity 2: Leading New Zealand

In the 1990s, four different individuals served as the Prime Minister of New Zealand – Geoffrey Palmer, Mike Moore, Jim Bolger and Jenny Shipley.

On your blog, write a short profile of one of our former Prime Ministers. Upload a photo of them with your post. Click on this link to find a copy of the template. Click on file and then click make a copy. This will save the blank template to your Google Drive so that you can fill it in. Post the completed template to your blog to earn points for this activity.

Leading New Zealand
Week 3, Day 5 (Bonus Activity)

Name of Prime Minister: Bill Rowling
Date of Birth: 15th November 1927
Political Party: Labour

Number of Years as Prime Minister: 1 Year
Three interesting facts about my chosen Prime Minister:

1. He was the 30th Prime Minister of New Zealand
2. He was the leader of the Labour Party
3. Rowling retired as prime Minister after Norman Kirk had died

Activity 3: You Have to Pay to Play

In 1990, for the first time in New Zealand’s history, universities and polytechnics started charging students money to go to school. Prior to then, it had been free to go to university or to a polytechnic. Since 1990, students have had to pay thousands of dollars to attend post-secondary (after high school) education.

The new Labour government have promised to give up to three years of free post-secondary education to all New Zealanders by 2020!

On your blog, tell us what you think. Should students have to pay money (tuition fees) to go to university? Why or why not?

My answer is a 50/50. But if I had to choose I reckon that students that are heading to university shouldn’t have to pay for tuition fees or pay money to get into university. When there is nothing to pay,  more people will enter into that University. Which means there is more people that will continue to learn.  There can also be people that can’t afford to go to University. That is why University should be free.

  1. Malo le lei Telesia,

I also agree with you that they should not pay money just to go university. It they didn't have to pay, for sure there will be more people going.

Good work on your Prime minister that you choose. I Knew him but I didn't know he was the 30th Prime Minister. I thought he was like in the 20's.

If you were able to change the cost of money, would you do it?

  4. Kia ora Telesia!

Fantastic work! That is a great list of items to take on the Tongariro Crossing. Thanks for sharing your extra tip, too! It's always important to know where you're heading or go with someone who does. I'd love to do the crossing one day, would you?

Nice profile on Bill Rowling. I find it interesting that he was only the Prime Minister for one year. Do you know why that is?

I agree with you - I think tertiary education should be cheaper for students as it would mean more people would be able to go and get qualified. I had to borrow lots of money from the government to go to university, which means my student loan is really huge (thousands of dollars!) and so I'd like them to be more affordable! Do you want to go to university when you finish school?

  5. Hi Telesia,
I liked your Bonus Activity answer for University and you are correct. People shouldn't pay to go to University because not everyone can afford and plus there would be more people learning and going University
