Summer Learning Journey Wk 1 Day 1 Activity 1 - In the Beginning...

Activity 1 - The legend of New Zealand (4 points)

According to Maori methodology much of Aoeteroa NZ was formed when Maui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Maui created a magical fish hook from jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. The 'fish' was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Maui or 'Maui's Fish' and the South Island of New Zealand is sometime referred to a Te Waka a Maui or 'Maui's canoe'.

Thanks for completing the first activity! On your third fact about the word "kiwi" please keep in mind that term kiwi can have 3 different meanings, kiwi is a fruit, it is also our national bird and is also used to describe the people who is from New Zealand. I think that is really funny but also can be a bit confusing for the many tourists that come to visit New Zealand every year, don't you agree?
This a great start on your journey keep up the good work!
    Kia kaha,
    Patricia
