Summer Learning Journey Wk 1 Day 1 Activity 3 - Ice, Ice Baby

Activity 3 - Ice, ice baby

Antarctica is the worlds coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn't rained for nearly 2 million year! it is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds and fish, There are so permanent human residents (people who there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.

This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary school in Christchurch. Just like aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.

On your blog, make a copy of this footprint and, in the foot print, explain how to create a positive, digital footprint. What do you do to stay smart online?

Here is my Positive Digital Footprint

Summer Learning Journey Wk 1 Day 1 Activity 2 - North and South

Activity 2 - North and South (4 points)

The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands - the north and the South Island. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Many of these people (including our Summer Learning journey design team) live in Auckland City. Auckland is a great place to live with lots of amazing parks, beautiful waterways and stunning scenery to enjoy. It is also a busy vibrant city with many cafes, museums, galleries and theatres to visit. I feel lucky to call Auckland my 'hometown'.

Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post.

Auckland...

I have lived in Auckland my whole life. Whats so special about it? Well, I am proud to say that the most special thing about where I live, is the people and the beautiful scenery's which are all around Auckland city. No city is more supportive and active as Auckland is. I know it may seem like i'm bragging, but its true. Auckland is place where you are able to interact with different people also with the chance of seeing beautiful views along the way. *sky tower*

Words to describe Auckland:

Bubbly
Energetic
Alive
Supportive
Many more

I am very proud to call Auckland City my home.

Summer Learning Journey Wk 1 Day 1 Activity 1 - In the Beginning...

Activity 1 - The legend of New Zealand (4 points)

According to Maori methodology much of Aoeteroa NZ was formed when Maui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Maui created a magical fish hook from jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. The 'fish' was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Maui or 'Maui's Fish' and the South Island of New Zealand is sometime referred to a Te Waka a Maui or 'Maui's canoe'.

To learn more cool facts about New Zeland, check out the Tourism NZ Website. Read the fun facts posted on the website and choose your 'Top 3'. On your blog, post your 'Top 3 Fun Facts' about NZ.

Here are my 'Top 3 Facts'

1. To become a New Zealand citizen, you must swear an oath of loyalty to Queen Elizabeth

2. NZ is one of the 3 countries in the world that has 2 official national anthems of equal standing. The first is God Save the Queen and the other is God Defend New Zealand.

3. New Zealanders are called Kiwis but Kiwi is not a fruit. It is a NZ native flightless bird

Act of Kindness from Glen Taylor School

Today, room 7 received goodies from the amazing Glen Taylor school. A group of students from their class came to room 7 explaining to us their project on giving back to their local community. The goodies we received were home made cookies, brownies and some lollies. As an act of kindness, we decided to give them a thank you letter as well as a plant that we planted during our trip to the botanical gardens. Room 7 were very grateful for their act of kindness and we appreciate the hard work they put into making the goodies specifically for us. Thank You!

Do teachers really need to strike?

For the past week, room 7 have been working on argument writing. Our topic was 'Do teachers really need to strike'. Our WALT was to express our thoughts to a specific audience. Here is my writing below!

Do teachers really need to strike?

Yes! Teachers do need to go on strike. It is a serious matter that the government should deal with. What is a school without teachers? What will students do? Here are some reasons why our teachers have every right to go on strike!

School resources are one of the many things which students need to be able to learn. Teachers need to ensure that their school is well equipped with acceptable resources. For example, special needs assistants for students who need it, from the ministry of education. Many students enter a classroom sad, hungry or not properly clothed. With proper resources, teachers can be able to provide those with food, clothing or even school stationery if needed. These will help students with all sorts of activities that can be done at school.

Many teachers are sick and tired of the amount of work they receive from their school and from the government. I hadn’t noticed this before, but, not only do teachers teach writing, reading and maths everyday, they have additional jobs which include making sure that every student is happy and that there are no problems such as cyber bullying or bullying. Students may not know it, but our teachers are full of stress that can be brought up upon others. Teachers need to have a say in how much work they receive so that our students are well taught. Well and better teachers mean a better outcome in our students learning.

Many schools around NZ have more than 30 students who attend their class room, which is way more than the average amount. Imagine this, 1 teacher 35 students. That's a lot right? Every student in a classroom deserves time with their teacher. But, as the the amount of students increase, that means the less time teachers have with their students. The most important key to a positive outcome in learning, is to have an opportunity to build a  positive relationship with your class teacher.

Teachers have every right to go on strike. With the amount of work they receive and the problems that they aren’t  even supposed to deal with, gives them every right to go on strike. Strike is the only way to grab the government's attention so that they can listen to the problems that have been brewing for a while now. The list of demands they’re asking for may sound a little crazy, but they’re stating the truth, and the truth needs to be spread.

The strike has nothing to with the pay (Although an increase in money would be okay) It’s about the students.

Kiwi Can

For this week’s kiwi can, our theme was resilience and our topic was perseverance. As always, we started off by introducing our new topic (perseverance) which was trying our best. Eg. ‘Have perseverance!’. It was time to play our energiser which was called perseverance challenge. There were four stations with 4 challenges. Each challenge had its own difficulties, and during the challenges we had to show perseverance. After our energiser we got straight into the purpose of perseverance and why we should show it. Last of not least we played our activity, which was called blind square. It was challenging but we got threw it with our teams. We then finished with our points. We had a total of 23.

Gymnastics Week 6

For today's lesson, as usual, we started warming up by running around the hall 10 times. Because it was the last week our coach, Ethan, decided to test us on simple gymnastics skills that were taught to us throughout the past few weeks. (For example, a handstand, cartwheel etc.) The most difficult skill would definitely be the handstand. It was great to see other students participating and trying their best to master that skill. Lastly Ethan tallied up the points and gave us either a bronze, silver or gold rubber band based on the score we received. Most of the students received and silver rubber band which was great. It was time for Maya to say a small thank you speech to our coach for all the hard work he had done to teach us.

We had a fantastic 6 weeks learning gymnastics and we hope to get another opportunity again!

Information Points - Glow in the Dark

1. WALT :
Make connections between different sources of information.

Meaning of WALT - Make links between different websites or videos of information.

2. Collection of Information :
Glow in the Dark known as Luminescence simply requires chemicals that store energy into the light.
These special substances are called phosphors (Different wording - Phosphorescence).
Make sure the expose the item to a light for a while so that it could glow in the dark again.
Chemiluminescence makes the object glow in the dark because of the chemical reaction.
Phosphors found in glow-in-the-dark toys are zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate.
Radioluminescence uses phosphors that are constantly charged by adding radioactive elements, such as radium, to them.
One from nature is Bioluminescence. Some creatures, such as fireflies and jellyfishes, contain chemicals within them the causes things to glow. Some creates glow for protection.
