In my class, we have been learning all about The Treaty of Waitangi and the history of NZ. All of our year 7 students from my class have created a thing link to share what we have learnt throughout the term. The Year 7’s were very fortunate that they could go to camp, so we learnt twice as much. We included all of the places that we visited in our timeline. Please Enjoy!
I am a Year 8 student at Glenbrae School in Auckland, NZ. I am in Room 7 and my teacher is Mrs Tofa.

Treaty of Waitangi (Explanation Writing)
It is important to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi at school. The Treaty of Waitangi is an important part of New Zealand’s history, so it is something we should learn about and follow in the future. Once they have learnt about the treaty, the children can teach it to others.
The Treaty of Waitangi is an important part of New Zealand’s history because it is the treaty that was signed by the Maori and British. We celebrate Waitangi day on the 6th of February each year. The treaty was a contract between the British and Maori and it is one of the most important documents in New Zealand.
We learn about it so we can pass it on to others when they are older. Otherwise when you grow up there is no one to teach the younger ones, because then people wouldn’t know why we celebrate it. 530 to 540 people have signed the treaty and 13 of them were woman. Why stop?

The Treaty of Waitangi
The Treaty of Waitangi is a treaty first signed on 6 February 1840 by representatives of the British Crown and various Māori chiefs from the North Island of New Zealand. It resulted in the declaration of British sovereignty over New Zealand by Lieutenant Governor William Hobson in May 1840.
The Treaty established a British Governor of New Zealand, recognised Māori ownership of their lands, forests and other properties, and gave the Māori the rights of British subjects. In return the Māori people ceded New Zealand to Queen Victoria, giving her government the sole right to purchase land.

Almost 150 years after the signing of the Treaty, the government tried to give judicial and moral effect to the document by defining another, new version, the "spirit" or "intent" of the treaty through specifying the principles of the Treaty.
